The end of the novel has affected me quite a bit. Hesse brilliantly outlines the difficulties of family patterns without sparing his main characters.
And yet, the dying marriage and its symbol, young Pierre, are drawn out while each of the characters analyse the process of death and regeneration that they are heading towards. In his time, Hesse was a popular and influential author in the German-speaking world; worldwide fame only came later.
Pierre is the only thing which links Johann and Adele, and when he becomes very ill, the couple becomes somewhat closer. The book, written inis translated from the German.

Fill in your details below or click an icon to log in: There isn’t a lot of story line,sickness, grief, the end of a marriage, but the day to day life, the role of a best friend, and even the descriptions of an artist’s concentrated effort are wonderful. Although the main charater, a successful artist, does agonize over his spiritual health it is primarily a reaction to a very unhappy marriage and the sharing of a beloved son with his alienated wife. This is one of my favourite novels I’ve read by Hesse, together with Steppenwolf.

He seats the man at one end of the fulcrum and the child at the other. A child, a token of love and affection, reduced to an instrument to rossyalde power over another person. What does he exemplify as a beacon for Pierre to journey toward?

A famous artist, at the height of his creative power, lives as a recluse with his estranged wife in a beautiful country house, Rosshalde, and their sole connection is the youngest son, over whose love and affection they fight jealously.
